An interview between Dayo Audi and Cain Leathem, the Director of GB Fitness.

Who is Cain Leathem?

Cain Leathem is a leading exercise and nutrition consultant owning and running GB Fitness. Previously he spent 5 years as the manager and staff trainer for Britain's largest specialist health and fitness store and he studied aspects of the human body, exercise principles and nutrition, as well as other related disciplines. As such he has a wide range of academic studies to validate his knowledge including his Masters Degree in Exercise and Nutrition Science.

As a highly qualified and experienced expert, Cain has a proven history of results and has achieved respect from his peers, appeared on radio and television, has been featured in many specialist magazines and written for "The Times" newspaper. Cain is the training director for GB fitness, NABBA gym instructor/personal trainer/ nutrition courses in the UK .

On the 22nd of May 2005 I bumped into Cain and asked if he would be prepared to have a short interview with myself sometime after the Britain , covering the all familiar grounds of training, diet and nutrition. He was kind enough to agree and I put to him a number of questions:

Dayo Audi
What is the percentage split between your male and female clients and are there any differences as to what they wish to achieve?

Cain Leathem
Amongst the general public I would say a 50/50 split. Amongst the women it's to reduce body fat around stomach and bum. For men it's for broader shoulders, bigger chest and arms.

Dayo Audi
What about legs?

Cain Leathem
Usually never mentioned. I think its due to the hard work involved in developing a good lower body. Moreover you can always hide a pair of skinny legs in a pair of trousers.

Dayo Audi
So with women it's less than a size thing and more to do with aesthetics?

Cain Leathem
Yes. It's basically to reduce dress size and look leaner and sexier.

Dayo Audi
Many schools of thought abound regarding the best diet combo for weight/fat loss. Which are you in favour of?

Cain Leathem
High protein, essential oils and low carbs. Notice I said "low" and not "zero". I feel for normal brain function an amount of carbs needs to be kept in.

Dayo Audi
Amongst the 3 key elements involved in any strategy for fat loss caloric manipulation, supplementation and aerobics for fat burning, which would you say was indispensable?

Cain Leathem
All are important. It's all or nothing. I tend to adopt a holistic approach. Never cut corners. Get your head down, pull all the stops and get the job done.

Dayo Audi
On a more specific note, which do you consider to be the best form of aerobics?

Cain Leathem
Power-jog or cross trainer exercises which work the whole body in tandem.

Dayo Audi
Are you in support of more stringent Governmental controls over the sport supplement industry?

Cain Leathem
No. Personally, I sense a conspiracy with the pharmaceutical giants over control. We have seen the most effective supplements either banned or their formulas "tweaked" to such an extent as to make them less effective. Junk food, which has been shown in study after study to be dangerous for long-term health is passed as "safe" for consumption. Check the statistics for obesity over the decades and you will see where I am coming from. With all the nutritional experts in Government and Universities it has to be an individual with celebrity status like Jamie Oliver to tell the Government what it has known all along. I can go on and on and provide you with examples of this double standard in policymaking but I elect to stop here.

Dayo Audi
I have a personal interest in asking you this question as I do a bit of personal training as well. Do you find it easier coaching men or women clients?

Cain Leathem
Most definitely women because they listen and respond better to instruction. The typical male from a psychological point of view has an ego problem, he always feels he has something to prove. Machismo comes before anything else. With women the only psychological barrier you have to try to make them overcome is their seeming lack of self confidence at the start. Once you get through that hurdle all other things being equal, you are on your way to success.

Dayo Audi
Can you outline for me a good supplements combo for optimum health for the fitness enthusiast?

Cain Leathem
A good multivitamins & mineral supplement. EFAs, anti-oxidants for free radical protection. Your zinc, Vitamin C & E, Immune system buffers, Glutamine supplementation. You are nothing without a healthy immune system. Nothing stifles progress more than recurrent breakdowns due to illness.

Dayo Audi
Whats the most ridiculous question ever put to you in your time as a personal trainer?

Cain Leathem
When I was manager of a large retail supplement complex in Birmingham, a group of lads deliberately got themselves overweight by eating anything and everything and got themselves "big". They then came to me to ask how the "size" they had acquired could be converted into muscle!

Dayo Audi
Optimum supplement health combo for the serious sports athlete?

Cain Leathem
Similar to that just mentioned for the sports enthusiast but in much higher dosages.

Dayo Audi
Women who are scared of using weights?

Cain Leathem
As an experienced personal trainer I can tell you, you will not get a toned body. Remove that negative mindset that certain exercises like the squat are for men. Hormonal make up makes it impossible for a woman to have a man's body. The best overall exercise for a woman's thighs, hams and glutes is the squat done properly either with a dumbbell or a barbell.

Dayo Audi
What about for breast firming?

Cain Leathem
I usually have my clients doing incline dumbbell rather than barbell because of the fuller range of movement.

Dayo Audi
Problem with beginners?

Cain Leathem
Wanting to run before they can walk. Impatience and the male ego. Trying to lift heavy to impress their peers or the opposite sex before they've learnt the correct technique. Not building a solid base of a few years of drug free training before their first purchase of "d-bol" or "sus" as they call it.

Dayo Audi
What about those who feel they need to target just a certain area of their body?

Cain Leathem
Spot reducing is a myth. You have to lose your weight all over. Certain areas of the body may hold more fatty deposits than others. I can accept that. This differs from gender to gender and individual to individual depending on body type.

Dayo Audi
Nutritional strategy vis--vis body type. The ectomorph/mesomorph/endomorph?

Cain Leathem
Ectomorph problem usually with gaining weight. Fast metabolism will make dieting short and relatively easy. Simple drop in amount of saturated fat and sugars should do the trick. Mesomorph  low saturated fat/medium to low carbs 50/50 complex fibrous/medium to high protein. Endomorph very low saturated fat/with higher essential fatty acids and very low complex carbs with fibrous carbs predominating. I will be stricter on the glycemic index of these carbs as well as opposed to the meso and ecto categories. These strategies aren't cast in stone. Weekly monitoring and the bodies response will determine alterations and modifications. Generally speaking not I am not a high carb believer and approach with caution any philosophy of excessive carb intake. Studies have shown that excessive carb intake can actually lower your immune system.  Anyone who knows me will tell you I have a negative view of sugars and simple carbs...just don't do it!

Dayo Audi
What about your thoughts on slow release protein?

Cain Leathem
The best slow release protein in actual fact is food. Eat solid food with differing glycemic index ratings. Nothing more natural and sensible than that. Only resort to supplementation as the last resort.

Cain has kindly agreed to post a few articles of his on our website for the benefit of our site visitors. We at SPN deal direct with the people who matter and who can bring profound changes to your lifestyle if you make the conscious decision for change.
