Carbloading in a Nutshell

By Dayo Audi, WBBF Mr Universe, IFBB Pro

Name: Nana Manu - UKBFF Bodybuilder. Under 80kg Competitor.

Nature of Task: To load muscle bellies with glycogen for UKBFF finals.

Duration of Carbloading Period: 48 hours.

Technique adopted: Inverted Pyramid.

Apparatus: Original Swecarb Vitargo Pure, mineral water, baked potatoes, dried turkey breast, dry white wine.

Method: Last 7 Days

Training and Diet days 1-3 of final week.

Progressive carbohydrate depletion while simultaneously increasing protein intake to compensate the loss of carb calories so as to hold on to muscle mass.  One hour bursts of high repetition rhythmic movements working the whole body over a 3 day period coupled with high intensity 1hr cardio session after each workout.  Zero carb diet not adopted.  The aim was to glycogen deplete and force the body to use the last bits of stubborn body fat for energy.  Protein intake during this period is maintained at an estimated equivalent of lean muscle mass.

From Day 4 - The Holding Phase.

Workout intensity dropped by 50% prior to the loading phase which commenced at noon on Day 5.

Day 4 was last training day.

Day 5 midday.  Beginning at 12 noon every 2 hours til 12 noon on Day 6.  60g of Pure Vitargo is consumed with complex carbs with no restriction on the amount of mineral water drunk.  Protein is halved at this point. Short burst carb intake to maximise absorption and minimise stomach bloating.

From 12 noon to 8.00 p.m. a day before the show.  Vitargo intake is halved to 30g together with complex carbs.  Water intake maintained til last meal at 8.00pm.

8.00 pm onwards - 2 glasses of dry white wine sipped and each visit to the loo is followed by 1/2 a glass of dry white wine mixed with mineral water until midnight.

7.00 am Day of Show - Craig Burnley (Nana's training partner) insists no diuretic is needed as no signs of "spill-over" are evident.  A picture message is sent which confirms this.

NANA WINS THE UKBFF UNDER 80KG TITLE FOR THE 3RD TIME AND IS INVITED TO COMPETE AT THE ARNOLD AMATEUR CLASSIC IN THE USA IN MARCH 2010.

Useful Guiding Principles

1) All supplements and other preparations known to have a direct or indirect effect on the absorption of carbs must cease during the carbing up phase.

2) Try to ingest Vitargo alongside solid complex carbs when carbing up.

3) Never mix Vitargo with maltodextrin and dextrose or any other sugars that 'act like' Vitargo.

4) Your body fat level must be appreciably low for glycogen filling to be effective.

5) Use the mirror to see how you look, not the scales.  One size does not fit all.  On paper it should take less Vitargo to fill a flat-looking 12 stone physique than its 18 stone equivalent.

6) Give enough time for getting body fat off so you can start the loading EARLY.  Adjustments can be more effectively made if you give yourself enough time.

7) You won't get a more original mix than using the Original powder itself.  "What can be more original than the original itself?"

All I have done has been to demonstrate what the original vitargo did for an athlete and the success he achieved. It was his choice to use the original   after using the vitargo+ creatine and Gainers gold in the off-season. I think it will be counterproductive to start getting into any argument about which Vitargo is better or which mixes better, that is not what my thread was about. The "logic" of your "argument" is not in keeping with the letter nor spirit of my article; a complete red herring I dare say.

The vast majority of athletes use lucozade as their preferred fuel despite the existence of this superior energy restorer and all the science behind it. Maybe it is those you should target.

The original vitargo powder is the source from which all vitargos come from. If Sweden is selling the brand as you have claimed, they will have their reasons for doing so.  It is not my policy neither is it in my nature to dictate to people as to what they can do and what they cannot or should not do.

There are very few people I have come across who have ever complained about the alleged "insolubility" of vitargo in its original form. At the end of the day it is still a starch with all its characteristic properties. To many folk I know solubility is not an issue. If you accept the fact that it is a starch then that is it;each to their own preference.

A supplement no matter how scientifically proven or researched it is is totally useless if there are no sales attached to it. In this industry I can count a number of brands  the products of which I would not even feed my dog  yet their sales figures are more than those of vitargo with all its grandeur and science. I think more attention should be focussed on the issues that matter  to vitargo as a whole rather than those that don't.
